Yearbook: The history of our year

Date: February 24, 2018 | By Emily Griffin, OHHS student

This year, I needed to fill my schedule so I had the choice to take three electives. While my other electives were things that were easy to me (Film Studies and Theatre), I chose to have my third elective be yearbook. I had always wanted to be involved in the yearbook, and, seeing as it is not offered as an extracurricular at Ogemaw Heights, I signed up to take it as my sixth hour.

Yearbook so far has been such a great experience for me. I have socialized with people I would have never socialized with before. None of my close friends signed up to take yearbook, so I had to find new people to talk with and get help from in my yearbook class. Yearbook has also made me more social because I have to go to events for my spread. Normally, I would not even go to school events.

I have learned a lot more about things in the school as well. I did not know what the building trades or metals classes did before, but that is what I was assigned both classes for my fall spreads. I spent a day in each of these classes and learned that the purpose of these classes was to help kids explore careers before college and become more proficient in these careers that they might choose to work in one day.

Yearbook has also helped me learn how to organize. I helped one of my fellow classmates organize a locker decorating fundraiser, and soon I will be organizing a fundraiser for March Madness. This has helped me learn how to manage money and how to determine what makes a fundraiser work. I have to determine how much people are willing to spend and if they are even willing to spend any money on what you are selling.

Overall, yearbook has helped me grow in many ways.
