Lung screening test available locally

A ten-minute lung-cancer screening can mean the difference between life and death for patients who have a history of smoking. Moreover, the screening is covered by most insurance companies for patients who meet certain criteria and is available close to home at West Branch Regional Medical Center.

The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends annual screenings for lung cancer with low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) for patients 55-80 years old who have a 30-pack-year history and currently smoke or have quit smoking in the last 15 years. To calculate the smoking history, patients can multiply the number of packs they smoke/smoked per day by the number of years smoked.

“Lung cancer screening has been proven to significantly decrease mortality rates due to early detection,” said Tom Oesch, director of Imaging. “It’s a good idea for patients who fall within the age bracket and meet the criteria to get a LDCT exam done.”

Oesch said the exam can be done yearly, like a mammogram, and must be ordered by the patient’s primary care provider.

“The exam is quick and painless and uses significantly less radiation than a normal CT exam,” said Oesch. “There is no prep for the exam nor any contrast injected. Most patients who are claustrophobic can tolerate the open area of the CT scanner.”

West Branch Regional Medical Center’s CT Department is accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) and is a member of the National LDCT data base for lung cancer. Exam times are available Monday through Saturday at WBRMC.

For more information about the exam, call WBRMC’s CT Department at (989) 343-3196.
